The GUPPYFRIEND Washing Bag reduces microplastic pollution from clothes washing by 1) reducing fibre breakage and 2) catching those that do break as part of the washing process.

The Guppyfriend bag was created by the NGO Stop! Micro Waste to tackle microplastic pollution.

Research done by German Textile Research Centre North-West, Fraunhofer Institute and University of California at Santa Barbara, found that the Guppyfriend bag retains 90% of microfibers that break off in the wash and reduces the amount of fibre breakage by 79-86%.

Microplastic pollution from clothing:

During the washing process microfibres shed from clothing and make their way through water systems into rivers, lakes, and oceans as they cannot currently be filtered out by water treatment facilities.

Plastic microfibers are then consumed by aquatic organisms, which can result in gastrointestinal infections and blockages, reproductive problems, and starvation. Microplastics threaten human health by making their way into our bodies through the food chain. They have even been found in human blood.

Materials

100% Polyester

Although the GUPPYFRIEND Washing Bag is made out of polyester, it does not lose any microplastic itself. The yarn of the filter material consists of a single strand of thread, a 'monofilament'. The yarn is therefore more like a stable stick that cannot unravel and lose microplastic fibres. In addition, the strand of yarn is round, smooth and the material is particularly resistant to alkalis. This results in a very tough and stable fabric that does not rub off and is not affected by washing detergents.
This differs from the yarns used for textiles. They usually consist of several strands of thread that are twisted together. With use and washing, the yarns unravel over time, causing them to lose tiny microplastic fibres.

Care Instructions

Please avoid:

- Rinsing under running water - so that the collected microplastic fibres are not washed into the environment
- Washing sharp-edged objects - to avoid damaging the material
- Ironing - this can damage the material (the crumpled surface is not a problem)
- Use in the tumble dryer - broken fibres can get out of the bag
